GENERAL INFO

What is Edgy ZEN Spa?
Edgy ZEN Spa offers a wide range of healing services in a relaxing setting, including Zero Balancing touch therapy, Soul Lightening Acupressure, Jacuzzi Whirlpool Tub water therapy, Clearlight Infrared Sauna heat therapy, group yoga, movement, and meditation classes, private yoga therapy sessions, and a zen meditation garden oasis, as well as regular workshops and seasonal retreats.

Where is Edgy ZEN Spa located?
Edgy ZEN Spa is located in Alexandria, Virginia, minutes from the White House, just off of I-395 (Seminary Road West exit), a main DC highway, in the Skyline Towers neighborhood. The street address is 5254 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22311.

What about parking?
There is convenient off-street parking as well as a reserved spot next to the private spa entrance. Pull into the driveway, go to the end and then turn your car around (there is plenty of space with asphalt and gravel) and park next to the house on the gravel by the front door.

Are you on the bus line?
Yes. We are located on the ATI to VanDorn bus route. You can find the route schedule here: http://www.dashbus.com/uploadedFiles/DASH-wwwroot/routes/20160904/AT1ToVanDorn.pdf

What do I need to bring with me?
If you are using the Jacuzzi Whirlpool Tub or Clearlight Infrared Sauna, please bring a bathing suit, flip flops or spa shoes, (towels will be provided). For all other therapy sessions, wearing loose comfortable clothing is ideal. For yoga and movement classes and private instruction, we will be moving, stretching, and strengthening, so clothes that you can comfortably move and sweat in is essential. For Zero Balancing and Soul Lightening acupressure therapy, it is best to wear loose long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and socks since clothing remains on during the entire session.

What should I expect?
After completing an assessment of your overall health and your wellness goals, you’ll receive a customized therapy session using interface, which is physical touch with the hands that combines structural and energetic realignment. We will evaluate and balance key areas throughout the body, first with you sitting, then lying face up, all while fully clothed. A treatment typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, and releases deep tension in bones, joints, and soft tissue. Afterwards, you may feel tingly, lighter, freer, energized, and more in tune with yourself and your body.

We recommend you add time in the Jacuzzi or Sauna to your therapy session (before or after) as the perfect way to enhance your experience and allow for deeper healing.

How long will the session take?
A Zero Balancing or Soul Lightening Acupressure session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, with the initial session being slightly longer due to intake forms and health assessments.

Do I have to take off my clothes during a session?
Nope. We use a unique type of skilled touch called interface, which is when the body’s structure and energy are touched simultaneously. We start first with you sitting on the treatment table, then lying face up, all while fully clothed.

HEALING MODALITIES

What is Zero Balancing?
Zero Balancing (ZB) is powerful touch therapy for body and mind. Deeply relaxing and energizing, using skilled fingers and touch at specific joints and along the skeletal system, ZB touches you at the level of bone, your core, and promotes wellness and balance by addressing your structure and your energy. Learn more Zero Balancing at http://www.zerobalancing.com.

What is Soul Lightening Acupressure?
Acupressure is the practice of applying hand or finger pressure to specific energetic or conductive points on the body. It is based upon the same ancient principles as the art of acupuncture, except that it uses the softer form of curved finger pressure on the points. Recipients of this work report feeling nurtured and supported. Soul Lightening Acupressure integrates traditional healing principles with a powerful method for awakening higher consciousness and soul expression and is based on these four basic principles:

  • Energy flow in the body promotes wellness and opens new awareness.
  • Touch and the flow of love from the heart are healing and strengthening.
  • Every person carries their own healing and wisdom within.
  • The purpose of Soul Lightening Acupressure is to empower that inherent wisdom.

What is heat therapy/infrared sauna?

Our Clearlight Infrared Sauna uses low-EMF True Wave™ Carbon/Ceramic heaters that produce invisible radiant heat. This is the same type of heat as produced by the sun and our bodies. Infrared heat is very safe and not at all like the heat produced by microwaves.

In an infrared sauna, only 20 percent of the energy is used to heat the air, leaving the rest of the energy to heat the body. The radiant heat can penetrate deep below the skin producing a gentle warming inside the body. The temperature inside an infrared sauna is adjustable and averages a comfortable 100°F to 130 °F. These lower temperatures allow you to sweat faster and to tolerate a longer sauna session, allowing greater therapeutic benefit.
Typical sessions last 20 to 45 minutes and leave you feeling invigorated, not depleted like conventional saunas.

What are the benefits of infrared sauna/heat therapy?
An infrared sauna has many healing properties that can greatly benefit everyone, especially harried professional and overworked parents. With regular infrared sauna sessions, you could see the following results:

  • Enhance your immune system by eliminating toxins and waste via intense sweating, which increases your overall health and resistance to disease.
  • Reduce pain and increase blood circulation for faster recovery.
  • Improve flexibility and range of motion and relieve muscle tension to bring healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries.
  • Reduce soreness on nerve endings and muscle spasms, especially effective for those suffering from many forms of arthritis, as well as in the treatment of sprains, neuralgia, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness, and many other muscular-skeletal ailments.
  • Release excess weight by producing sweat, pumping blood, and burning calories.
  • Enhance your heart health and release toxins by increasing blood circulation and stimulating the sweat glands, releasing a built-up of toxins in the body.
  • Minimize the appearance of cellulite – superficial pockets of trapped fat, which appear as uneven dimpling or “orange peel” skin.
  • Relax, renew, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit with just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of an infrared sauna, which have also been shown to affect the autonomic nervous system, putting you in the parasympathetic (rest and digest) state allowing your body to heal.
  • Improve skin health by increasing circulation and drawing your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface so you’ll see better tone, elasticity, texture and fresh color. Increased blood circulation has also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions, and cuts.

What precautions should be taken before participating in heat therapy?
As with any healing therapy, please consult your medical doctor before use. Infrared saunas should not be used by individuals with the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hemophilia
  • Fever
  • Insensitivity to Heat
  • Alcohol / Drug Abuse

Seek permission from your doctor prior to use for the following conditions:

  • Taking Medications
  • Under 12 years old
  • Over 40
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Chronic conditions

Infrared saunas creating a cure for or treating any disease is neither implied nor should be inferred. In the rare event that you experience pain and/or discomfort while in the sauna, immediately discontinue use.

What are the benefits of water therapy (or hydrotherapy)?
In addition to being one of the most effective way to relax and unwind, water therapy offers a number of physical benefits, including:

  • Relieving muscle pain and tightness and improving joint flexibility
  • Reducing arthritis symptoms by causing blood vessels to dilate and increase circulation and relaxing tight muscles
  • Helping to decrease inflammation to damaged nerves and muscles
  • Increasing blood flow and stimulating circulation
  • Lowering high blood pressure due to stress
  • Producing more restful sleep by inducing body’s natural sleep mechanics
  • Raising heart rate while lowering blood pressure, simulating mild exercise
